Music at All Saints

Music is one of the fundamental mysteries of Creation and of human experience. It is by nature and by divine command a central feature of Christian worship. When the members of a local congregation lift their voices in praise, petition, and penitence, they join with the whole Church-past, present, and future; in Heaven and on Earth-as well as with Creation and choirs of angels. Our song is first and foremost directed to our triune God-Father, Son, and Holy Ghost-whose love and power have made us and whose grace and mercy have redeemed us and make us new.

Our parish's musical practices are informed by this majestic vision of the place of music in life and worship. Each Sunday's hymns are selected to complement the readings and prayers designated for that week in the Church's year. Along with our organist, Barbara Chapdelaine, our choir is committed to offering music to accompany each service and highlight the themes presented by Bible and Prayerbook. The choir's anthems and motets (most of which are sung a cappella) are selected from a five hundred-year-long choral legacy with a strong emphasis on music from the Renaissance, especially the English choral composers of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Our parish music director, Ken Myers, is committed to promoting musical literacy for the entire congregation, for both the benefit of their worship practices and the enrichment of life between Sundays.

Our music ministry website at www.allsaintsmusic includes more information about the music we sing (and why), about teaching children to appreciate the Church's musical legacy, and about resources for adult music education.
