+ St. Irenaeus was born in or near Smyrna 135-140. St. Polycarp was the Bishop of Smyrna and in his later years Irenaeus frequently recall his preaching and instruction. Polycarp himself frequently recalled the preaching and instruction of St. John the Divine, aka, “the beloved disciple” of the Gospel of John, who instructed him! Irenaeus ended up a priest in the Church of Lyon at a time when most of the clergy had been imprisoned for the Catholic Faith. In 177 those clergy sent him to the Imperial City with a letter warning the bishops of Rome (there was no single, imperial bishop in Rome till about 190) about Montanism, an early heresy. While he was in Rome there was a massacre of at least 48 Christians back in Lyon. Irenaeus, who is best known for defending the Church against Gnosticism, died around 202 AD.
