+ The well-known friar and preacher, St. Francis of Assisi, was born Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone in 1182. Friars differ from monks in that they live, work, and serve a community rather than residing in cloistered asceticism and devotion. Francis founded the men’s Franciscan Order and the women’s Order of St. Clare and the lay Third Order of St. Francis. St. Francis is one the most popular and venerated saints in history. After a short period of high-spirited living he visited Rome and spent much of his time with the beggars at St. Peters. When he returned to Assisi he took up street preaching and gathered a large following. It was after this period that he traveled to Egypt where the crusaders were besieging Damietta. He was hoping to convert the Sultan of Egypt to Christianity and after a bloody battle Francis and another friar crossed the Saracen line. According to contemporary sources he was taken to the Sultan and he permitted to preach Christ, but the Sultan was not converted. Francis and his companion were returned unharmed to the crusaders. Francis died on the evening of October 3, 1226 singing Psalm 141. He was 44.

+ Wednesday Agape & Christian Education is Wednesday October 3. We have regular classes for the nursery and the children, as well as adult education. Fr. Glenn is teaching The Revelation of St. John the Divine at the Wednesday agape. We are especially looking at how the imagery used by John enabled the first Christians to confront the political idolatries in a world dominated by Roman power and ideology. The Revelation calls Christians to eschew those who would make themselves God’s rivals for the hearts and minds of people all over the world.
