+ St. Lucy, also known as St. Lucia, was a wealthy young Christian martyr who is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and the Anglican Church. According to her narrative she born in 286 and while she was still young her father died. Her mother arranged for her to marry a young pagan, but Lucy urged her mother to spend her dowry on the poor instead of a bridegroom. She had given her heart to another Bridegroom, by which she meant our Lord Jesus Christ. When the young man discovered that her wealth was being distributed to the poor, he denounced her to the local magistrate who ordered her burned as a sacrifice to the Emperor’s image. When she was told that she was to burn her reply was, “I offer to Him myself, let Him do with His offering what it pleases Him.” But they were unable to burn her so they plucked her eyes out and stabbed her. She is known as a patron saint of the blind and of writers.
