+ Septuagesima is the 9th Sunday before Easter and the 3rd Sunday before Shrove Tuesday the day before Ash Wednesday. This season is sometimes known as pre-Lent or Shrovetide. This 17 day period has traditionally been seen as a time to prepare for Lent. It is not in itself penitential although vestments are violet and the Gloria is not said, however flowers are permitted on the Altar.
+ Saint Cyril (d. 444) is known for countering the heresy of Nestorius, which claimed that the Incarnate Christ was not fully and simultaneously God and man. At the Council of Ephesus in 431, Cyril asserted that there could be no atoning of sin if Christ was not man, and that Our Lord must also be God, in order to redeem that which he had become. The council also proclaimed Mary truly the “Theotokos” which means that she is the Mother of the One Person who is truly God and truly human. “Only if it is one and the same Christ who is consubstantial with the Father and with men can He save us, for the meeting ground between God and man is Flesh (of the Virgin Mary his Mother).”
