Anglo-Catholicism

We are Anglican because our tradition of prayer, worship, and music is rooted in the Church of England and the Book of Common Prayer. We are Catholic because we embrace the faith of the universal church, grounded in the Holy Scriptures, the Creeds, the Seven Ecumenical Councils, and the theology, practice, and devotion of the ancient and undivided Church. Our parish community grows from this Anglo-Catholic tradition, grounded in the celebration of the Seven Sacraments.

There are many different terms for our way of worship and prayer depending on what tradition you may come from. Some refer to us as ‘High Church’ or having a ‘High Liturgy;’ others might say we are traditionalists or contemplative; and of course there are some more critical terms as well such as spikey, Puseyists, or ritualists! While all of these help define a parish, none of them can describe the richness of our liturgy. We invite you to come meet us and experience this prayerful and vibrant community for yourself! We love to welcome new members into our community and encourage visitors to ask questions so we may explain the great treasures of our tradition.

Our Bishop

The Most Reverend Chandler Holder Jones, SSC, is Presiding Bishop of the Anglican Province of America and Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese of the Eastern United States. Bishop Jones is a native of Surry County, North Carolina. He has degrees from Emory and Henry College (BA, 1993) and Duke University Divinity School (MDiv, 1996), as well as graduate studies at Dominican House of Studies, Washington, DC. Bishop Jones has been a priest since 1996 and served seven congregations in Virginia, Maryland, Florida, and Georgia. For thirteen years, he served as Rector of Saint Barnabas Anglican Cathedral, Atlanta, Georgia. He was consecrated to the Episcopate in 2010 to serve as Suffragan of the Eastern United States and was subsequently elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese in 2019. In July 2021, he began his new ministry as Presiding and Diocesan Bishop. He has also studied English literature at Exeter College, University of Oxford, England and Anglican history at the King’s School, Canterbury Cathedral. A convert to the Continuing Anglican Church movement, he has been an Anglo-Catholic for over forty years. He is married to Megan Jones née Baskwill (2000) and has four children.

Parish History

All Saints has been a vibrant and welcoming Anglo-Catholic parish in the Central Virginia region for generations. Our parish got her start in the 1980s with the gathering of some very strong-willed folk who were members of the Prayer Book Society, an organization dedicated to the classical Book of Common Prayer. Soon after, we welcomed The Rev. Canon Glenn Spencer as Rector, and over the next three decades, under his leadership and by God’s grace, the parish has grown to be a place of spiritual formation and worship.
